Trend slaves everywhere have already been sporting the key detail of the season, but not without some difficulty: in a not-so-subtle nod to OTT power dressing, the statement shoulder has returned with a vengeance. Hardly an easy trend to adapt to civilian life, is it really something we can incorporate into our daily ensembles? Previously deemed best left to yuppies and the cast of Dynasty, the shoulderpad has worked its way down the runways of Louis Vuitton, Balmain, and Marc Jacobs. How long before such atrocities trickle onto the high street, only to be picked up by any easily-influenced 13-year-old on the bustling rails of Primark? A chilling prospect. However, it is feasible that sharp-angled jackets and asymmetric detailing can be both modern and soft, best illustrated by Roland Mouret and Herve Leger. Indeed, while culprits such as Madonna and Gaga parade futuristic (albeit highly unwearable) angular suits, many recent red carpet offerings have shown that strong shoulders can offer glamour and a flattering silhouette. The verdict? Approach with caution.
