How to make budget gravy granules edible, and even tasty: 4tsp Somerfield Gravy Granules ½ pint (250ml) water 1 tbspn Oil (or tspn butter) 1 onion Half a clove of garlic Black pepper and salt Finely chop the onion and garlic and brown in the oil. Mix the granules with the water and pour slowly over onions. Simmer for 10 mins, stirring occasionally to avoid a gloopy mess. Season to taste. Estimated cost: <£0.60 How to make cheap white rice more interesting (Paella style): 125g rice 1 tbspn oil 1 onion 3 Saffron Strand (or tspn of paprika) Red pepper 100g peas Half a tin of tomatoes Glass of white wine (Any cheap wine is acceptable, consume the rest, otherwise this is definitely a culinary waste) Black pepper and salt Pour the rice into a large frying pan (or paella pan if you have one) with enough water to just cover. Leave this on a medium heat, without stirring for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, lightly brown the onion, adding the red pepper at the last moment. Slowly stir the white wine into the rice, adding the saffron. Simmer for ten minutes. Add the red pepper, onions, peas, and half a tin of tomatoes Simmer for further ten minutes. (Only stirring occasionally, to stop the pan sticking) Add salt and pepper to taste. Estimated cost: <£1.50
