I’d like to take the opportunity provided by this new Norwich student newspaper to welcome you at the start of a new academic year, whether that be at UEA, the Norwich University College of the Arts, or City College. For new students, the next few weeks are likely to be both exciting and, at times, daunting. For returning students, there will be the pleasure of meeting up again with your student friends, the challenges of more demanding coursework and, for finalists, the perhaps daunting prospect of preparing for life after university. Some have characterised these student years as the happiest in their lives – from the perspective of someone with almost entirely grey hair, I can assure you that there is the potential of many more very happy times ahead, but there is no doubt that the student years are very special. The friends that you make and the experiences, knowledge, and understanding that you gain can have a major influence on the rest of your personal and professional life, so I encourage you to make the most of the time you have: Enjoy and engage with your academic courses; doing more than just the absolute necessity can make learning exciting and much more personally satisfying; Get involved in extracurricular activities, for example: as a course representative for your academic department; joining, or even starting, a club or society; or giving some of your time and skills to one of the many volunteering projects in Norwich. Seek help early on if you encounter any difficulties or problems. There are experienced staff ready to help and guide you wherever you are studying in Norwich (website details are given below). I hope that you have a great year. With all best wishes Dr Annie Grant (Dean of Students, UEA) UEA: http://tr.im/yzVQ NUCA: http://tr.im/yzW0 CCN: http://tr.im/yzW2
